Chocolate Pumpkin Marble Loaf

This chocolate pumpkin marble loaf swirls rich cocoa batter with spiced pumpkin for a moist, cozy fall loaf – perfect for Halloween and autumn baking.

There’s something about the shift into fall that completely changes the way I bake. As soon as the mornings turn crisp and pumpkins start popping up everywhere, I reach for those cozy, spiced flavors I come back to year after year – like my Classic Pumpkin Pie, the soft, cinnamon-swirled Pumpkin Spice Babka, or that Pumpkin Spice Chai Pudding I fully justify as breakfast (and honestly, no regrets).

This Chocolate Pumpkin Marble Loaf is fall in cake form. Rich chocolate batter and warmly spiced pumpkin batter are swirled together in a striking marbled pattern that looks dramatic but is surprisingly easy to achieve. Each slice strikes that perfect balance between deep cocoa richness and tender, gently spiced pumpkin cake – cozy, playful, and just a little bit spooky.

Finished with a tangy cream cheese frosting (optional, but highly recommended), this loaf is as fun to decorate as it is to eat. Whether you keep it simple or lean into Halloween vibes with spiderweb drizzles or candy eyes, it’s a festive bake that feels special without being fussy.

  • Two batters, one loaf – chocolate and pumpkin
  • Beautiful zebra swirl with minimal effort
  • Cozy fall spices without being overpowering
  • Fun to decorate for Halloween, but still great plain
  • Soft, moist crumb that stays tender for days
  • Skip the frosting and dust with powdered sugar
  • Add chocolate chips to the chocolate batter for extra richness
  • Swap nutmeg for pumpkin spice if you prefer
  • Bake as muffins – start checking at 20–25 minutes

Pumpkin purée: Brings moisture and warm fall flavor. Use plain canned pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling.

Cocoa powder: Adds deep chocolate flavor that contrasts beautifully with the pumpkin batter.

Spices: Cinnamon and nutmeg keep the pumpkin layer warm but balanced.

Hot water (chocolate batter): Helps bloom the cocoa powder for richer flavor.

Cream cheese frosting: Optional, but adds tang and makes the loaf extra festive.

How to make Chocolate Pumpkin Marble Loaf:

Chocolate batter in a large clear mixing bowl being whisked.

1. Prep your pan and oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan well. You can also line it with parchment for easier removal.

2. Make the pumpkin batter

In a medium bowl, whisk together the pumpkin purée, sugar, oil, egg, and vanilla until smooth.
In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the pumpkin mixture and stir until just combined.

3. Make the chocolate batter

In another bowl, mix the sugar, cocoa powder, and baking soda. Pour in the hot water and stir until smooth — this helps deepen the chocolate flavor. Add flour gradually until you have a thick but spoonable batter.

4. Create the zebra swirl

Spoon alternating dollops of pumpkin batter and chocolate batter into the prepared loaf pan. Don’t overthink it – the irregular layers are what make the swirl beautiful.
Once all the batter is in the pan, use a knife or skewer to gently swirl through the loaf once or twice.

5. Bake

Bake the chocolate pumpkin marble loaf for 50–60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs.

You’ll know the loaf is ready when the top feels set, the edges pull slightly from the pan, and a toothpick comes out mostly clean.

6. Cool completely

Let the chocolate pumpkin marble loaf cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool fully before frosting.

7. Frost and decorate (optional)

Beat together the cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla until smooth. Spread over the cooled chocolate pumpkin marble loaf and decorate as simply or playfully as you like.

  • The flavors deepen beautifully the next day
  • Make ahead: Bake the chocolate pumpkin marble loaf a day in advance – it tastes even better the next day

Yes – just make sure it’s thick and not watery.

That’s normal. The contrast helps create defined swirls.

Absolutely – it’s delicious on its own.

Alternate spoonfuls directly on top of each other and swirl lightly.

Yes – an 8×8 inch square pan works too, though the bake time may be a little shorter. You can also make it into muffins; just reduce the baking time to about 18–22 minutes and keep an eye on them.

This chocolate pumpkin marble loaf is gently sweet – perfect for a snack or light dessert. If you’re looking for a dessert-level sweetness, the cream cheese frosting takes it there.

Likely because it was underbaked – pumpkin batters need a full bake.

This usually happens because of too much swirling. One or two gentle passes is enough.

This Chocolate Pumpkin Marble Loaf is one of those fall bakes that’s as fun to make as it is to eat – cozy, playful, and full of seasonal flavor. Whether you dress it up for Halloween or keep it simple for everyday snacking, it’s a recipe that brings a little magic to the kitchen.
